Tools for Vitality: Therapy, Coaching, Optimizing Nutrition and Movement for Mental Wellness

Sibylle Georgianna:

Hey, it's Sibylle Georgianna again, and today I get to start talking about how we can enhance our mental wellness through our food intake. And thereby create our ability for voice and sanity. Everyday with the means that we are able to consume. I get so excited when it found this area of psychology that is called nutritional psychology and one of my recent continuing education experiences with nutrition and psychology gets to bridge the gap between psychology, helping the mind helping the person's mind holistic well being. And integrative medicine, which looks at a person's health from a most holistic perspective that we can think of looking at the mind and the body, and the sole meeting and support and optimization for it. system to be at its best. And I also got inspired to look into this because I get to work with a lot of beautiful people who unfortunately, some of them have to do with very complex medically, sometimes even unexplainable symptoms will get to deal with chronic illnesses. And I get to work with them to overcome these challenges. And a lot of times, it seems to me that this idea of care is very much in a in a certain like draw, one draws open up to find something that helps with pain alleviation. Some of it helps them with open another draw help with the anxiety and depression. And instead, I would want to invite us to look at this beautiful picture of looking at the person in the most holistic fashion, mind, body, soul, and spirit. And therefore, then find ways to optimize all of it. And the idea is that through nutrition, we can get a far way. So for example, I took a class and I just wanted to give you like a little bit of a introduction here, where we can really see how the food intake, so influences how we feel about ourselves, our mood, our anxiety, and how we can with the food thing take just really enhance the body's body function to heal itself, and how we can even with the way how we eat, create chemicals that help us regulate our mute. And these chemicals are called your transmitters, which we'll keep referencing here. But it is going to be a beautiful discovery here to look how you with your average way of having an average budget having an average rate of consuming food every day, we're not meeting you to become a chef or you know shop in a very expensive supermarket. But how we can even with the way how we pay attention to our nutrition, help us support our mental well being. So this one is not going to be anything about giving you nutrition advice, because I'm not a nutritionist, and at the same time, just inspire you to be encouraged to look for these small ways of being that you can totally use every day. And with every day that you practice them, you are making a significant influence and a positive impact on your way of being and feeling and even like your body's ability to heal itself. So there's a ton of things to talk about in this. And so the idea is that we are looking at ways to you know, help us optimize in you know, in the average day and every day a way of being. Now, when I grew up on the farm on the countryside, my family was relatively self least in my early childhood, self sustaining in a huge garden, we would go to the place where they would bring the milk, we get the yogurt, we would I rarely I don't even think my mother ever bought an apple in the store. We always had the apples from the tree and then also the food would be consumed in a relatively unprocessed fashion. So for me to talk about this is really more something that I got into once I moved and had my own duties to cook and eat and provide healthy food even now for my family. because growing up as usual when we grow up we may not appreciate the good things as much as Unless we really become aware of it. And so, as we're diving into this overview, and then later on into episodes, what we just talked about maybe one thing that I came across that I thought was so amazing for you to use to boost your well being that we could just partner together and look at food as a friend and ally, instead of sometimes we may not have like what we eat, or we don't, we know we should eat certain things. And instead, we can become our enemy on this. So we would just talk a little bit through the topics as they arise. And that way, we can, even in this area of nutrition, optimize our physical vitality, and therefore, through which and optimize our mental well being. So if we look at even, you know, the different food groups that are out there, it seems to us that for me, when I looked at it, that the average diet is really too high in fat, as well as a lot of times too high in these very simple carbohydrates through processed foods. And I was shocked about that, to learn about that, in a way in the nutrition psychology course that I took. So because I wasn't really aware how much our body is, is the one through the food that we take in, that gets to them produce the feel good hormone, serotonin, by the way that we eat. And as we're as I'm usually just going through my life, I wasn't even paying much attention between carbohydrates that are simple versus complex, for example, or looking at micro versus micro, macro nutrient nutrients. To even understand what am I taking in, for example, protein and fat or carbohydrate. But what really caught my attention was what we call a food mood journal that they introduced. And I get to talk about that in an upcoming episode. So stay tuned for that. But it is eye opening how, with these simple ways of, you know, just paying attention to what we eat, and how we that it can significantly boost or deplete our mood. And I just want to all, I remain your biggest fan. And I just want us to get through these, you know, seasons in life, that we're all facing the most complex challenges, and the best way possible. So I want to give you food for thought. If you could throw a magic switch? How would you want your diet to look? How would you want the topic of food to look like? And how would you want to see yourself successful. And I know this is a very big picture. So I'm just giving you an example from my personal life. Because when I noticed that, since I'm not living right now in on the font that my parents had, and so I don't have the garden, I don't have access. I'm not making time for having that type of food production, as I saw and grew up with at my parents house, I had to come to terms with the limitations in my life. And I pick one goal that I try to keep pursuing, which is to have a cook functionally for my family, but to have one meal every two or three weeks on the weekend, where I can just be very deliberate in terms of the produce I, by the way, how it's, you know, how it's produced, the way how it's cooked, the way how it's stored. And again, I have to scale that from watching, witnessing my mom's ability to cook and price food multiple times a day, to just in this very limited scope that I have available right now in my life. So I want to just invite you to think like how would you see yourself successful if you want to get something from the topic of food, whether that has to do with becoming an expert and how you eat or not eat your feelings, or how you want to be the expert and the Sherpa to your own mood. By shepherding yourself through, you know, a way of eating that helps you and boosts your mood or where you just want to maybe find some time to attend to this. And for me. As simple as silly as it sounds with just having maybe one out of three or four weekends to make a deliberate choice of cooking preparing story. That is my goal that would I would see myself with this. Successful that I would role model even in this very limited capacity to my family that providing good nutrition to them is a really high priority for me. So I'm going to invite you to brainstorm and think big and dream big. And it could be that to to see yourself successfully beating nighttime cravings, sugar cravings, Doritos craving, it could be that you feel maybe less critical of yourself that you feel you can embrace your body as it ages. It may it may be aging as I look at my body, everybody's body is aging. So I want to just invite you to be setting this up a gentle goal to pursue as you listen to these episodes. And stay tuned to join me on this path to optimize nutrition for your mental wellbeing and sanity. Bye for now.
